Tamed: Witton History

In 2014 the Environment Agency will begin improvements to the flood defences in Witton and Perry Barr. MADE is working alongside them to involve artists and communities in this work and to explore the cultural heritage of the area up until the present day.

Artists and historians will be exploring the Tame and the area around, and the individual journeys through Witton and Perry Barr of residents past and present. There will be lots going on, including events, workshops, printed work and exhibitions for the whole community to get involved in.

THERE WILL BE THREE ARTISTS WORKING ON THE PROJECT.

Jenni Coles-Harris: Artist-Historian

The first is the Research and Outreach Artist, who will consider the changing relationship between the river and the people who used it, exploited it and lived and worked alongside it and use this research to inform their work with present day communities. Contact Jenni

Rob Colbourne & Stuart Mugridge

The second is the Design Team Artists, whose role will be focused through the period of the flood defense planning application to oversee the installation/construction programmed to commence in the Spring. Visit Rob's website. & Stuart's website.

All artists and Nita Newman

The final artist, the Community Artist/Maker, will facilitate workshops within the community to create pieces which will be integrated permanently into the project output in some form, for example in the wall or along the cycle path. This will be all three previous artists along with Nita Newman.
